EATS:

 ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH AND COST

Eating with the environment, alone, in mind can get complicated- when looking at the science. All food production has some degree of negative environmental impact. Our eating habits are one of the leading causes of environmental degradation and global warming. As conscious consumers we have to decide what method of growing, type of food and where we get this food from is going to limit degradation as much as possible. However most of us then have to hand pick the healthy AND tasty options, which is often lucky as often these two beauties go hand in hand. Lastly, most of us also have to consider economic costs if we're eating on a budget. Phew.... If that all seems a lot to take in, here's the cliff notes version of the following article:

But if you are interested in knowing more about eating for your health, saving $ and eating environmentally, read on!

NUMBER ONE TIP:

EAT MOSTLY PLANTS, LOCAL, WITH THE SEASONS & FROM THE FARMER

There is a HUGE variety of science about sustainable eating. Science is the best place to start when thinking about what we consume.

So... I thoroughly recommend you head to Google Scholar and do some reading for yourself. It's easy to find yourself following the bandwagon of popular movies about veganism, but there is a HUGE array of scientific research into what we eat, for different health scenarios and different areas of the planet! Veganism doesn't work for everyone, and I don't advocate complete veganism and completely disassociate from the hate campaigns. Balance, again, is key.

If you're looking for a quick fix diet this is not for you... This is a sustainable lifestyle of eating good, healthy food but with a balance of treating yourself so often  Check out my blog piece on why FAD diets are rubbish.

THIS SECTION IS EVOLVING. WE WANT TO BRING YOU THE MOST UP TO DATE RESEARCH, BUT WE ALSO KNOW YOU'RE KEEN TO KNOW MORE, SO YOU'LL SEE THE UPDATES AS THEY HAPPEN. FOLLOW OUR INSTAGRAM AND BLOG MORE DAY TO DAY FOOD INSPO!

Todays Meat Free Monday is a shout out to SNACKS!

This is a (potentially) plastic free, vegan deliciously healthy and satisfying snack.

It comes via Oh She Glows. I found her book in our local library and tested out these crackers because I am a snack fiend.

They are honestly so delicious, so simple and so easy too!

Just don't forget, that nuts, seeds are luxuries.. And should be enjoyed as treats!

Our regular readers will have noticed that we haven't published any Meat Free Monday's for a few weeks.

This is because I am currently in Bali! We came for a holiday, and whilst Lee has returned, I've stayed on. This is because living standards on Malapascua are below a level that makes it very easy to work remotely. Bali, on the other hand is a digital nomad's paradise, and it's easy to see why.

This is my fifth visit to Bali....

I have been in The Philippines for 6 weeks. In this time I have achieved so much and I am absolutely adoring working on Making Roots full time. This is also an incredible time to figure a lot about myself out in rapid time. I am learning when I work best (early mornings absolute fire zone!!) how long I can work for (14 hour days, yes please) and slowly learning how to schedule my day, week and month to make best use of my time...

Every week we share a delicious meat free Monday inspo. This weeks recipe comes via Dish.com and it's for something unusual, but that I can vouch is bloody delicious. Frozen peas are good all year- and can be bought increasingly in bulk plastic free! Peas are also protein dense. I personally would serve this up minus cheese and egg- and just enjoy the peas.

Why is meat free monday important? Eating less meat is good for us and...

I am a conservationist, with special interest in sustainable development. This means that I want to conduct conservation work- with special regard to helping communities in biodiverse regions benefit economically and developmentally from wildlife. This gives them a big reason to protect the...

The vegan movement is a big one. And I’ve been wanting to write this article for a while, compelled by taking a stance against an angry, hateful section of a movement that has a scientific, environmental background of trying to make some POSITIVE change. I have waited, afraid of the back lash I would receive, and also not wanting to gatekeep, or to rise to the hate. But this issue has been niggling at me for a long time....

I have been asked a lot, especially recently if I've a vegetarian, or vegan. And although the answer is no, it's not a straight forward no- and I thought I'd explain why...

Eating less meat is so easy. Modern day veggie is not eating a bowl of lettuce. This Satay Chickpea Burger from Grill'd (Aus) is freaking amazing.

At University I completed my research project on food sustainability systems, for six months I read every scient...
