Some books arrive into your life my a small stroke of magic.

Whilst looking for non fiction books on Scotland to take on a big Outer Hebrides adventure a few years ago, I accidently found this book in my Mum’s bookshelf. A forgotten relic of my grandparents book collection, I was over the moon after a fruitless search so far.

I began reading this book whilst in the Outer Hebrides, throughly enjoying the feeling of place. It gave depth and meaning to the islands and how the lifestyle was in recent history. This deep sense of place led me to put the book back down for a few years, until being back on a holiday in Scotland, after I moved away. This book was not one I wanted to rush.

I adore this book. It is the second book in a series, but that isn't overly noticeable. It is calm escapism and full of funny stories, whereby you are really transported. It’s inspiring and empowering especially considering the time in which it was written. This book is a legacy book and I thoroughly recommend leaning into older books. I have recommended this book to family too.
