DIY Ethical hamper ideas

Hampers are wonderful gifts for those tricky to buy for, those who have everything, those in need of some TLC, a more personal gift- the list goes on. However putting together a hamper can be tricky and time consuming without a plan, more so if you're putting together a hamper for a eco-conscious loved one or even a secret Santa. However making a hamper yourself is not only an opportunity to make a much more personal gift it can be significantly cheaper too.
Hamper basket sourcing:
There are plenty of secondhand options for hamper baskets available in charity shops and online marketplaces, if you are looking for a wicker basket. You may also choose to buy a handmade multi use basket (for example a gardening trug) as the main gift, baring in mind hamper baskets are not that useful beyond their intended purpose. Alternatively, you could put the hamper in a decorated upcycled cardboard box, a reusable bag or a big mug, if the gift is a smaller workplace gift for example.
Sourcing contents
I try to source all items from small shops, ethical brands etc. But it is also possible to find ethical brands and luxury items in supermarkets, if that is what is available to you. If you're creating multiple hampers, you could buy things in bulk and split the contents across multiple hampers, for example bath salts can be repackaged into cute little parcels.
I tend to build a hamper on a range of small gifts and edible elements as I find that gives a mix of short term gifts and long term mindful moments, but this hugely depends on your recipient. Games, books, candles might suit some and a wholly food orientated might suit others. Homemade might make some peoples day whilst others may prefer packaged (especially if they have allergies or preferences). The most important part of building a hamper that is ethical/ eco friendly is making sure you know the person you're buying for that they will use the items, to prevent waste. Think of it as a mindful time to get to know and understand them more.
