Tips for using Too Good To Go

If you're interested in saving money, food waste or both, then you might have heard of the app, Too Good To Go. I reviewed the app a few years ago, you can read the review here. But after years of using the app on and off, I thought I'd share some quick tips on how I navigate the app to try get good deals and save waste.

First thing I bare in mind, is if navigating TGTG on a budget, it is often not cheaper than making yourself or buying from the supermarket. Sandwiches and cakes sold from chain stores will probably still more expensive than supermarkets. Be mindful of 'saving money' compared to the reality of what you are getting. Of course, it can be hugely cost saving if you don't have your usual resources, if you would have bought from the store anyway or if you're on the go and it's the right time for pick up.
I always try and prioritise ordering from independant stores on the Too Good To Go app if possible.
I always check reviews before purchasing for my own sake. I have ordered from a restaurant that was clearly making up cheap sandwiches and 'selling' via the app, as the food in the magic bag did not remotely match anything served in the restaurant (disgusting cold white bread sandwiches from a boutique cocktail bar). Some will also have small quantities of food going out. There will also be some venues sending out magic bags that is past it's best. The reviews can help you decide whether it's a good deal, whether you will get the desired quantity of food. It's a good idea to add to those reviews too, but make sure you don't solely leave negative feedback, leave good reviews when they happen too.
I don't regularly check the app and I have silenced notifications. Don't be guilt tripped or drawn into collecting food that you wouldn't otherwise have bought.
I use Olio more regularly, as this food is free and genuine food waste.
I always try and be kind to staff when I'm picking up. You will probably be picking up from stores at their closing time. Those working in cafes might have been working since the crack of dawn, so as always, be kind.
I hope this helps. This blog is not sponsored in anyway.
